<span style=”background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);”>Hi guys
Wondering if anyone can shed a little light my way. I’m looking for a powered usb hub for my MacBook Pro, I run a Traktor S4, Ableton Push, Maschine, Audio 2 DJ Interface and occasionally a USB drive and some other things iPad /iPhone. I’ve just purchased the Advent 312 http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computi…28377-pdt.html but sometimes when I boot the Mac up it doesn’t always power the Maschine or S4. Been looking at some other models and someone said that Native Instruments only use the dlink hubs but which model are these?
Thanks in advance </span>
Hi,
Unfortunately the link you posted doesn’t work for me, so can’t see exactly what model you have.
As a general rule, a USB-port has a maximum amount of power it can deliver. That’s laid down in the USB standard.
For USB 2.0 it’s 500mA, for USB 3.0 it’s 900mA and for 3.1 (newest version since 2013) it’s a whopping 2000mA (or 2A which means 10Watt! @ 5Volt, as opposed to 2,5Watt for USB 2.0).
Now, this is PER PORT! Let’s say you have an 8-port USB 2.0 hub and you want to use all of them for full power, the hub would need to have an external power supply that can supply 8 * 0,5A = 4,0A @ 5V. Quite frankly, a 4A power supply is a pretty big one.
I just picked a random one:
And you can see where it says capacity 5Watt. @ 5V that is a grand total of 1A 0r 1000mA. Divide by 4 ports and presto, with all ports going only 250mA per port. Half of what it could be.
Long story short, you can get a USB 2.0 powered hub, but you’d have to check the supplied power adaptor can deliver 0,5A per port. Brand should not play a part. It’s really as simple as how much power do you need and how much can the hub supply. Normally with stuff like mice, memorysticks and even some external HDD’s it’s relatively low, but when you start hooking up stuff like full blown controllers and Maschine it soon starts to add up and there is just not enough power available.
First rule of engagement, imho, is to always use external power on any device if it has that option (so the S4 for example, always use power adapter, not the USB only option).
So, two steps to get going:
1) use all units mentioned with their own power supply if at all possible (S4, Push – not the Maschine & Audio 2 DJ I think)
2) Get a powered USB hub with a strong enough power supply
Hope that helps & greetinx.
